How high will you fly?

Many of you know what a Seth Godin fan I am, so you won’t be surprised that I’m reviewing one of his books.
Prior to the launch of The Icarus Deception I received an announcement from Seth Godin that he was trying Kickstarter as a new way to promote his upcoming book. My friends say that I am a great marketer, but they also call me a marketer’s dream. Being the marketer’s dream that I am – I bit and pre-ordered the book. I patiently waited in anticipation.

WOW – it was worth the wait! It’s a fast and inspiring read.
The book starts out recounting the Greek myth of Icarus disobeying his father by flying too high to the sun which led to his death. The book takes off when we learn “the rest of the story” about how our society has left out that Icarus was also instructed not to fly too low. Mr. Godin poses that it is more dangerous to fly too low and that our industrialized society encourages us to play it safe, get a steady job, don’t take risks, don’t make a mistake, etc. Godin challenges us to engage in the new “connection economy” and treat our work like art. Toward the end of the book he lists habits of successful artists:

• Learn to sell what you’ve made.
• Say thank you in writing.
• Speak in public.
• Fail often.
• See the world as it is.
• Make predictions.
• Teach Others.
• Write daily.
• Connect others.
• Lead a tribe.

I enjoyed the book so much that I downloaded it from Audible so that I could get a boost for my creativity and squelch my “lizard” brain. And, if you don’t know what a lizard brain is — give me a call or read another of Seth Godin’s books that I recommended: Linchpin – Are You Indispensable?
