The The 5 Second Rule Reading Experience
The book is written in a conversational tone, and you will feel like you are having a chat with a good friend over a cup of coffee. Mel Robbins’ keen sense of humor and her tell it like it is storytelling is entertaining and fun. She describes how she came up with the rule, why it works, how to use it, and how it has impacted not only her life but the lives of thousands of people all over the world.

The Short Version of The 5 Second Rule

  • As soon as you get the feeling that you should do something
  • Count backward – 5-4-3-2-1
  • And immediately move on it

The countdown shifts your mindset, interrupting your habit of overthinking, and acts as a “starting ritual” that opens the door for action.

The first paragraph of the book states, “You are about to learn something remarkable—it takes just five seconds to change your life. Sounds like a gimmick, doesn’t it? It’s not. It’s science. I’ll prove it to you. You change your life one five-second decision at a time. In fact, it’s the only way you change.”

The Science Behind The 5 Second Rule
Mel Robbins knew her 5 Second Rule worked, but she wanted to understand why it worked – and she wanted to prove that it worked. Because she is an attorney by profession, she spent several years researching the science behind her 5 Second Rule as if she was preparing for a trial. The science is interesting, she sites many studies that back it up, and she gives many more examples of people who have written her to vouch for the 5 Second Rule. The book is repetitious, but I think this is written this way to provide myriad situations where the 5 Second Rule can be used.
