Is Your Marketing Going According to Plan? (Why You Need A Plan.

Have you ever noticed that you see some ads over and over? They seem to be repeated ad-nauseam. The reason for that is because they are working. If you’re really paying attention, you’ll notice that they appear more frequently at some times of the day than others. On television it might be during prime time viewing or during the daytime soaps. It depends on the product. On the radio it might be at peak drive times. For direct mail it might be a series of post cards.

The importance of an integrated planning calendar
The key to marketing activities that work (i.e. they are noticed, they are remembered, and they get responses) is that they are usually part of an integrated and systematic marketing activity plan that is executed on a timely and consistent basis.

One tool that can help you systematically and consistently execute your plan is to post the activities on a marketing activities calendar. Then review and update the calendar weekly. By reviewing the calendar on a regular basis you can stay on top of your marketing activities. Make sure to look at the activities and initiatives for the week, month, quarter and half-year. With this one small “marketing habit” you will find that you stay on top of your plan and you will smooth out the peaks and valleys of your sales.

For an easy and “sharable” calendar – try Google Calendar. We use this tool to help our clients develop a marketing and social media calendar (each type of tool can be a different color) that can be viewed and edited by us and their internal team.

This is the fourth installment of a series of teaching videos we filmed several years ago. As a consultant, I’m currently developing a Podcast that will launch on October 2. I thought it would be fun to pull these videos out of my archives in anticipation of the podcast The Webb Works and I are working on. Although I closed GrassRoots Marketing Group, Inc. several years ago, the series of videos truly does help a company think through important marketing tools and tactics that can result in a Marketing Action Plan (MAP) — or the improvement of an existing marketing plan. I hope you enjoy the series as much as Jim, Lou Schuyler and I enjoyed creating them.
