Laura Woodard Book Review: "The Dutiful Daughter’s Guide to Caregiving" by Judith D. Henry

GrassRoots Medical Marketing was born out of the real-life challenges I faced while caregiving for my mom and Aunt Jan. I remember how frustrating it was when Mom’s physician would say, “She needs a specialist,” and I’d spend hours searching online for the best doctor I could find nearby, close enough to both her nursing facility and my office. At that stage, she couldn’t travel far, and I didn’t always know where to turn for help.

Before I ever stepped into that role, my book club had read The Dutiful Daughter’s Guide to Caregiving, a memoir by Judith D. Henry, and this little book turned out to be a gem. Judith approaches caregiving with honesty, humor, and a bit of sass, something you rarely find in this space. The book’s insights, like the HIPAA Privacy Act Release Form, choosing a rehab or nursing facility, caring for yourself, and key questions to ask doctors, offer real-world tools for your “Caregiving Toolbox” and give you a glimpse into what to expect along the way. Most importantly, it reminds you that you are not alone.

Reading it nearly ten years ago gave me perspective and comfort I didn’t know I’d need. Even now, I still send copies to people just beginning their caregiving journey. Thank you, Judith, for sharing your story and showing us that, even on the hardest days, we’re going to be okay.

Pro Tip for Physicians: If you treat geriatric patients or interact with family caregivers, this is a must-read and can help you better understand and support your patients’ caregivers.
